Horizon 30d
Bottom line
Two of eleven tripwires have tripped in the last 72 hours, both in the Black Sea maritime set. The model has raised the probability of a sustained disruption to Ukrainian grain exports via Odesa to 38% over 30 days (from 24%). Wheat futures are carrying roughly half the implied premium; sunflower oil is carrying almost none.
What changed
- War-risk insurance quotes for Odesa calls crossed the 1.0% hull-value threshold on 12 March (tripwire BS-03).
- AIS gaps for bulk carriers in the north-western Black Sea exceeded the 20% daily threshold on two consecutive days (tripwire BS-07).
- Hormuz and Red Sea indicators unchanged; Taiwan Strait exercise notice expired without incident, scenario downgraded.
Assessment
The insurance move is the more informative of the two signals: it is priced by people with money at risk and historically leads a drop in sailings by five to nine days. The AIS gaps are consistent with either precautionary transponder discipline or a genuine threat; the model weights them at 0.4 until corroborated by a port-call count.
Watch next
- Odesa, Chornomorsk and Pivdennyi daily departures (threshold: below 60% of trailing 30d mean).
- Romanian Constanța rail and barge throughput as the substitution route.
- Any change to the Turkish Straits notice regime.
Confidence
Moderate. Two independent indicators agree; neither is yet confirmed by physical volumes. Revisit at 1800Z or on any further trip.
